Located just a few doors down from Ray Price Harley Davidson, Zman, Justin, Biscuit, and the rest of the staff are at the ready to turn your hotrod and kustom car dreams into reality. And Zman knows how to throw a party too... Ole Time Barbecue brought the pig and Killer Filler brought the rock. We couldn’t have paid for a more perfect backdrop for an afternoon of surf, soul, garage rock, lounge, and whatever else we could think of.... the plan was pretty much to “run what we brung”, and that’s just what we did. Special thanks to friend of Killer Filler, Bill “Dances with Gnomes” Robertson for snapping the majority of these pictures!

Festival For the Eno

What can you say? The Festival For the Eno is like an Earth Day Celebration, with a kick-ass soundtrack that lasts for three days. This was KF’s second year at The Eno and we migrated from the River stage to the Meadow stage, which is definitely more in the thick of things. Bryon’s son, Basie, tagged-in as official show photog and and did a bang-up job. He was relentless and his persistence and timing resulted in some really freakin’ cool shots (reference the above pic of his Dad for proof!). The sky blackened towards the end our set, almost as if on cue, as we closed out with A Night In Tunisia, which absolutely rocks. Laika and the Cosmonaut’s must have penned this version of Dizzy Gillespie’s classic, during a Finnish drought, because it certainly brings the rain in NC... this was basically a repeat of the cloudburst we conjured up with Tunisia at Carolina Brewing Company’s Big Bash.

The cool surf and sizzlin’ Memphis Soul were perfect compliments to the 90+ degree temperatures we had that day. A key move from an ill-equipped potting shed to a a shady patch beneath a stand of pine trees made the afternoon much more enjoyable. Since we didn’t play Heavy Rebel Weekender till Sunday, I drove the ’53 just for fun. Crispy got, well, crispy, by the end of the day... he didn’t realize the back of his neck was getting cooked to perfection. Ahh, the price to pay for giving people a beat to schlepp mulch and begonias to their cars.

Malamondo's CD Release at The Garage

KF was given a great honor to open for The Malamondo’s most excellent “Roctopussy” CD release party at The Garage (110 West 7th St.) in Winston-Salem. To say it was a hot and steamy night would be an understatement, and I’m not just talking about temps and humidity. The headliner’s and their “Mala-Minions” were in rare form. Hallmark guitars a-blaze, thunderous Bonham licks, and a fiery temptress fronting the band whipped the crowd into willing submission. Aside from the aural treats in store, the “candy and condoms” were distributed, as is tradition. I wish I had a recording to share, but the pics will have to do. The Garage had an ace soundman in the house, and he had all the players dialed-in to a tee.

A fun part of the trip was a KF culinary bonding experience at Hill’s Lexington BBQ. This place is on the NC BBQ trail, and for darn good reason. It was the best Lexington style ‘cue I’ve ever had. Chopped, Blocked, or Sliced, the choice is yours. We each tried something different and the lack of conversation was a true indicator that the food was delicious. Crispy and Bryon were digging on their carrot salad, while I opted for a smoky bowl of pintos (seasoned just right). The “dip” for this traditional Lexington style ‘cue was sweet yet spicy, with a richer flavor than most. Sortof a BBQ fan’s “au jus”. Crispy also scored some nifty paper hats... in a KF version of “Where’s Waldo?”, see if you can spot Crispy’s haberdashery statement.
The “Backyard BBQ” is a very cool radio program on WXYC, that is broadcast on Sunday evenings from the campus of UNC-Chapel Hill. The show features local bands and artists, and is one part interview, one part “name that tune”, and one part archeological dig of music, bands, and history related to the group. Bryon and Rusty had prior commitments, so we were unable to perform in the studio (hopefully next time), so Crispy, Pete, and Murph did their level-best to be witty, engaging, and informative (errr, and to basically not sound like total dorks).
